Hey Family,
Hope you had a good weekend. I got back to Brooklyn last night, I had such a nice time this weekend with fam and enjoyed seeing old friends at my high school reunion. I love interviewing publicists because I know as a businesswoman how important it is to build your brand the right way so its always interesting learning about different techniques and what has and hasn’t worked for people.
Olivia I wish you the best!
Thanks again
Ally
She-blogs: Who is Olivia Dikambi? A young entrepreneur, owner of I AM PR Agency and a music enthusiast.
She-blogs: What inspired you to start “I AM PR Agency” and why a focus on music PR? I wanted to give a platform to entertainers to be heard and talked about. I didn’t necessarily choose to solely focus on music, but that’s where most of the demand came from.
She-blogs: You managed to get your client, Rapper/ Guitarist David E Beats on MTV, BET, on WHCR 90.3 FM, All Hip Hop Radio) and nominations at the 8th Annual Underground Music Awards….which is amazing. What sets your PR Agency apart from the rest? We really work hands on with the artist to create the best campaign and and exceed their expectations. We tend to spend more time on artist development to ensure the artist is fully ready to be marketed and promoted the right way. We’re a non-traditional agency and really proud about that.
She-blogs: What is your criteria for accepting new artists as clients and do you think every artist needs PR services? I proceed almost like a label where I scout talent but to be honest, most of the clients come from referral or contact us because they have heard of us online or assisted at one of our events. So there is no typical criteria when accepting new artists. So far I haven’t had a situation yet where I refused to work with someone because of different business models or bad music, or anything of that nature. I definitely believe every artist needs PR. It’s good to be proactive nowadays and a lot of artists are self-publicized but you can only go so far. At one point, you will need to implement a team to support your promotional efforts.
She-blogs: What advice do you have for someone that wants to break into the PR industry? Can you name a few realistic starter tips? Do your research about the industry and the top people in your field. It’s a tough industry and you need a thick skin. If you can, find a mentor and intern as much as you can, but again, you need to find the “right” company, one where you can really learn a a lot and grow as a professional.
She-blogs: I would love to learn how to speak french. I heard you speak four languages, what are they and has that helped with your business? Besides English, I speak French, Spanish, and Italian. I haven’t used it to my advantage yet, and that’s because I was focusing on the American market. But we plan on extending our network overseas to other countries, so knowing multiple languages should definitely help.
She-blogs: What’s an average day like at I AM PR Agency? I usually start by answering all my emails and making important phone calls. Then I do some intense pitching. I also either attend my clients video shoots, photo shoots or radio interviews. We also attend our own events and mingle with our guests when we throw a concert or release party.
She-blogs:Where do you see yourself in five years? In 5 years, I see myself in a very good space. Hopefully by then the company will have launched its European division.
She-blogs:Name one place that you have never been that you want to travel to and why? Japan, I’ve been obsessed with the idea of visiting for years now and just never had the opportunity or made the time to visit. It’s definitely on the list of things to do before I die.
She-blogs: What is your mantra on life? It is a blessing and needs to be enjoyed to the fullest!
She-blogs: When was the last time you laughed so hard you couldn’t breathe? When I head the Lil Kim diss record against Nicki Minaj-
She-blogs: What do you do to stay balanced? I read.
She-blogs: What do you like the most about the way you look? The fact that I don’t let clothes, hair or make up define me anymore. I still look professional, yes I do look like a marketing geek but I totally embrace my look.
She-blogs: What do you like to do for fun? I’m a couch potato and love to watch shows like Desperate Housewives, Entourage or How to Make it in America. You get the idea. If not I like to read and go to the movies. I get entertained quite easily.
She-blogs: Are you Happily single or Happily in love? Happily in love.
